4 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Confinement Nanny in Singapore

(Source: Unspash)

Do most of us shop for a confinement nanny the same way? We check her years of experience, read reviews, ask around the family or friends group chat. But the questions that decide whether your month goes smoothly aren't about her. They're about you. Here's what to sit with before you commit.

1. What if this nanny is not the right fit?

Different ideas about routines, communication styles that don't mesh, or simply a personality mismatch… it happens, even with the most experienced nanny.

Let’s say you go freelance, you're likely relying on your own judgment and a direct conversation with her to sort things out.

If you go through an agency, and there's usually a third party involved to help mediate or quickly arrange a replacement.

Neither route is risk-free. Either way, a quick chat in the first few days about how you like things done goes a long way.

2. What happens when confinement ends?

The end of confinement can feel like a cliff edge. One day you've got help, the next day you're on your own with your baby, and things can hit harder than you'd expect.

That’s why a good handover matters. It eases you in. In the final days, you run through the key routines yourself with someone beside you, so you’re not doing them solo for the first time. At Yanxi Mama, we plan that transition into the last days of confinement.

Whichever route you take, ask what the handover looks like before you book, so you know exactly what to expect when your confinement period ends.

3. How much does a confinement nanny actually cost in Singapore?

Cost depends on a few things you'll want to sort out early:

  • Style of confinement:
How do you want to recover? Traditional confinement care in Singapore focuses on the baby so you can rest, this is more suitable if you are already an experienced parent and you are willing to be more hands-off in order to rest on your own. Modern confinement care by Yanxi Mama adds a layer of mother care, and this is where managing a mother’s well-being individually is crucial for a good confinement experience. These specially trained nannies are more premium in Singapore.

  • Experience:
Don’t be fooled by the years of experience. 15 years of experience doing 2 jobs per year may not be better than 4 years of experience doing 8 jobs per year, so worth asking how many families she’s looked after too.

  • Special request:
Chinese New Year season is when many nannies want to go back to their hometown. To encourage them to work, families would often have to pay a surcharge for the nanny to be willing to work during CNY period.

  • Twins?
Some nannies are experienced with handling twins, but there will be a surcharge in order to lock in these nannies with this skillset.

Agency packages typically run in the high $3,000s to S$5,000s for a 28-day live-in stay, not inclusive of the levy, red packets, insurance, and admin.

4. How long should a confinement nanny stay?

28 days is the number everyone throws around. But is it actually the right number for you?

Consider this… confinement in Singapore usually runs somewhere between 28 and 56 days, and it comes down to your own body and your own situation, not just tradition.

C-section?
Vaginal delivery?
First baby with zero backup at home, or grandparents who live five minutes away and can jump in?

All these things matter.

What your mum or friends went through is a great starting point, but you know your body best. Ask yourself what you’ll need, and what’s good for you and your baby.

Freelance or agency, there's no universally "right" answer. It just comes down to what you actually need this month to look like and how much you're comfortable handling yourself versus handing off.

Either way, going in with clear answers means fewer surprises down the line.

And this is exactly why we built Yanxi Mama the way we did: mummy first, baby always. We're the only confinement agency in Singapore that puts a mother's recovery on equal footing with baby care, not instead of it, but right alongside it.

If you’re still weighing your options, we'd love to walk you through ours and answer whatever's on your mind.
