Confinement Nanny Insurance: What you need to know
When hiring a confinement nanny, many parents assume the insurance works the same way as domestic helper insurance — but they are not the same.
Domestic helper insurance is designed for long-term employment, usually over one or two years. Confinement nanny insurance, on the other hand, is meant for short-term, intensive caregiving during the critical postpartum period. While the policy is technically optional, it is an essential safeguard for Singapore employers hiring nannies under MOM regulations.
Under MOM guidelines, the minimum coverage required is around S$60,000 per year for inpatient care and day surgery. This protects both employers and the nanny from unexpected medical costs.
A standard confinement nanny insurance plan typically covers:
Hospitalisation & surgical expenses
Pre- and post-hospitalisation treatment
Personal accident
Funeral expenses
Repatriation of mortal remains
COVID-19 extensions
Waiver of co-payment (Optional)
One common question we receive is about outpatient coverage, such as GP visits for minor injuries. Most confinement nanny insurance plans do not include outpatient benefits by default. While some insurers offer this as an add-on, the premium is often almost double — which may not make sense for a 1–2 month confinement role.
In practice, paying out-of-pocket for a GP visit is usually more cost-effective. And if a nanny sustains an injury that affects her ability to work (for example, a hip injury due to a fall), it is often better to change the nanny altogether rather than prolong recovery. At Yanxi Mama, we support this approach by offering unlimited nanny replacements, and our clients also enjoy preferred insurance rates through our insurance partner, or you can visit our Yanxi SHOP to get an ala carte quote for the freelancer you’ve already found.
